Written by:Acne is one of the main reasons why patients go to a dermatologist and is also one of the disorders that involves more dissatisfaction for patients. However, with proper treatment, you can receive medical care from the best specialists in dermatology in order to eliminate the injury linked to acne
At what age can you manifest acne?
Acne can occur at any age, from the first years of life until adulthood (over 50 years). Must dispel a myth, namely the idea that acne is the result of puberty and going to disappear over time, without any care: treating the acne problem from the beginning you can prevent the appearance of scars that, once they are on the face, it is difficult to remove. The outcome of treatment for acne depends on the targeted selection of therapy and changes according to the patient, the type of lesions and their duration. In addition, it must consider factors such as age, job, presence of concomitant diseases and medications, possibility of pregnancy, and hygiene habits.
What types of treatments exist for acne?
In recent years we have introduced new anti-acne treatments very important, especially for the most severe cases of acne. You can tell them apart: topical therapy, systemic and physical for acne and scarring.
Topical therapy to cure acne
Topical therapy is useful to treat mild acne and of recent onset (the case of adolescents with few purulent growths and that do not leave scars), that moderate, associated with oral therapy, and following a systemic treatment. The most commonly used topical agents are benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid or alpha hydroxy acids.
Systemic therapy to cure acne
The systemic therapy involves the use of oral antibiotics (particularly for inflammatory acne), oral isotretinoin and hormonal therapy (used for cystic acne)
Physical therapies for acne and scarring
These include the surgical excision (removal) of the growths caused by acne (cysts or micro-cysts). Photodynamic therapy is useful in those few cases in which the inflammatory acne can not be treated with oral treatments. As for the scars, it is used the laser ablative in order to shorten the time of post-surgery recovery.
