Chiari malformation: what is it?
The malformation of Chiari consists in the descent towards the vertebral canal of the more caudal portion of the cerebellum, called cerebellar tonsils. There are various forms of Chiari malformation, but by far the most frequent is type I, characterized by descent of the cerebellar tonsils and presence of syringomyelia in about 40% of patients.
