What makes up vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty ?
Written by:Dr. Cardama Francisco Manuel Barrientos, orthopedic Top Doctors, will talk about the discoplastias and kyphoplasty.
What are the discoplastias and kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is percutaneously introducing a tube into the interior of the vertebra, the vertebral body, the tube introduced through a balloon, inflating the balloon, to dilate the fractured vertebra to recover its original height and fill it with concrete.
Discoplastia involves inserting the catheter percutaneously into the center of the intervertebral disc and vaporizing inside the disc with a laser beam to cause the disc to shrink.
Anyone can use this treatment? ¿It involves some risk?
Any patient can use this treatment because it has fewer contraindications and risks that open surgery.
What are the advantages of discoplastia?
The discoplastia allows us to treat symptomatic disc protrusions by a minimally invasive way and with minimal risk of injury to the noble structures.
And kyphoplasty?
The advantages of kyphoplasty is possible to treat vertebral fractures in a minimally invasive and with a short operation and results often spectacular for fractures. It would not be feasible in most cases these fractures intervene so that the patient would have to stay for a few months with pain and with some sort of brace and rest.
What kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are differences?
Vertebroplasty is also percutaneously, filled with cement vertebra without trying to recover its original size. The advantages of kyphoplasty are very important because they often can recover all or part of the original size of the vertebra.
