I lost my voice: the treatment of voice disorders
Written by:Sometimes, when we talk about a long time, it happens to have the voice drops. The professor. Giancarlo Pecorari, Otolaryngologist, talks about voice disorders and suggests there any tricks to not remain voiceless
1) Because sometimes we lack the voice?
Dysphonia is an alteration quality and quantity of the spoken voice, sung or shouted. The causes are varied: inflammatory processes, acute or chronic, or important diseases, such as polyps, vocal cord nodules and tumors.
Possible causes include diseases of the larynx or of the vocal tract, ie that portion which allows to give tone, intensity and tone of the voice and that includes the lung, larynx, oral cavity, oropharynx and nasal cavities.
2) Who is more likely to remain without a voice?
Are the professionals of the voice. The voice professionals are those who earn their living partly or completely with the item and then teachers, commercial, lawyers, TV announcers, actors and singers. Obviously all these people are most at risk, but also acute inflammation, such as acute laryngitis, rhinitis and sinusitis, can alter the voice.
3) Dysphonia: how to retrieve the voice?
If it was an inflammatory process to alter the voice, the use of anti-inflammatory steroids can brilliantly solve the problem. However, if the alteration is related to excessive or improper use of the voice, in this case you have to stick to the vocal hygiene standards well known by speech therapists.
Among the most trivial tips, there is a break between one spoke and the other, especially if you talked for so long. A teacher, for example, can also speak for 45 minutes: should, then, have the possibility of making a stop of 20 minutes. Another tip is to speak very slowly, without straining your vocal chords and maintaining an appropriate posture to phonation.
4) Taking care of the voice: prevent dysphonia
There are several ways of preventing the dysphonia. One of these is to hydrate well the vocal cords, drinking at least a liter and a half of water per day, or by placing a wet handkerchief near the mouth and inspirandone moisture.
Another tip is to not wear very tight clothes, because these prevent proper coordination between breathing and phonation. We must, then, always remember to speak slowly and have breaks between one spoke and the other.
