What is gastroesophageal reflux?
The gastroesophageal reflux disease is a relatively rare disease that affects between 7% and 10% of world population. This is manifested after meals with heartburn in the area of the sternum, in the esophagus or with chronic cases of reflux which may lead to burns of the esophagus.
What are the causes of gastroesophageal reflux?
Generally at the level of the hiatal region it is present a series of anatomical mechanisms and anchor and a sphincter mechanism that prevents reflux. This mechanism, however, sometimes it does not work properly and stomach contents acid tends to rise without obstruction. In other cases, instead, the reflux is linked to 'hiatal hernia which causes a total block of the systems and the consequent rise of the possible appearance of reflux with esophagitis.
What are the goals of surgery to eliminate gastroesophageal reflux?
The objectives are the anatomical reconstruction of the components of the hiatal region and the creation of mechanisms that do not allow the return of gastroesophageal reflux.
What is the surgery procedure?
Gastroesophageal reflux is treated surgically through the intervention Nissen laparoscopic. The purpose is to create a mechanism to prevent the return of the acids and aims at the consequent prevention of heartburn.
The laparoscopic surgery presents final results?
The percentage of success is very high (95%) and the complication rate is extremely low, especially in cases of intervention by laparoscopy.
