Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is an invasive II level examination that can be performed from the 16th week onwards and consists in taking the cells of the liquid surrounding the baby (amniotic fluid) through a very thin needle, under ultrasound guidance, transaddominal . The amount of amniotic fluid removed rebuilds in a few hours and the procedure lasts for a few minutes. The results will be available in three days thanks to the rapid techniques (QF - PCR) and the definitive chromosomal map may be in twenty days. The abortion risk associated with the previously estimated examination is about 1%, according to recent literature review about 1 out of 1000 - 1 out of 3000 procedures performed. Through amniocentesis, it is now possible to study many genetic pathologies.
